The Faculty of Mathematics was founded in 1933. Since that time it has been prepearing teachers of Mathematics, Information and Computer Science, and since 1999 it has started training teachers of Information and Economytoo. Since 1992 the Faculty has developed a wide range of programs to meet the demands of the local education system. Today it offers programs in School Management, Social Pedagogics and Psychology, Sociology.

The constituent Departments of the Faculty are: Mathematical Analysis, Algebra, Geometry, Mathematics, Computer Science and Didactics of Mathematics.

The Faculty of Mathematics was among the first to experiment with teacher training in a multi-level structure. It enables the Faculty to raise the quality of general, scientific and vocational training and to make this system more flexible. Annually, ten - twelve top students who complete the Bachelor program move into the Magistracy. Later, the most talented of them, who demonstrate a special ability for research, may be recommended for a Post-Graduate course.

The specialists of the Faculty successfully participate in the development of State Standards of higher pedagogical education. Their spheres of interest include: various research programs, educational methods and technologies; publishing, and vocational orientation.

Professors of the Faculty regularly contribute to special foreign journals, and participate in international conferences and symposia. The Faculty took part in the Norwegian project of communication of schoolchildren through international computer networks. The coordinator of the International Communication project in Altai is Professor S. Karakozov.
